Aaron Friesen

Ranfurly, AB

My name is Aaron Friesen. I was born prematurely and was very tiny. I weighed only two pounds and ten ounces. There were times when I was still in that new born stage where I simply forgot to breathe for long periods of time. This lack of oxygen is the reason why I have spastic bilateral cerebral palsy.

I am fine otherwise, but this medical condition affects my legs. I have been in a wheelchair my whole life, and I’ve never been able to walk, except for with a walker, but I only use it for exercising because I’m only able to walk short distances at a time, so I’m in my wheelchair most of the time.

I used to be angry that I was in a wheelchair, and I still am sometimes, but being angry all the time doesn’t change anything, so I finally accepted that this is a life long thing and I’ll just have to make the best of it. It took going through some hard times and meeting the right people to realize this. I’ve had four surgeries on my hip and two on my knee. I will probably have to have more on my hip because it still bothers me, but if having more surgeries will help me in the long run I’d be willing to have them done.

After I accepted that I’ll probably never be able to walk I’ve just been trying to be as independent as possible. This is my dream now, that’s all I want–to not have to depend on other people anymore. I think this dream is slowly becoming true. But I am getting heavier and people can hardly lift me anymore, and for school I might be taking courses that aren’t in the school and I don’t want to have to depend on other people to drive me back and forth, and college is also not too far away, so to gain my independence I NEED this wheelchair accessible van. If I get this van I will have reached my goal, my dream would be a reality–I’ll be just as independent as everyone else. PLEASE vote for me.
