Hi! my name is Alix (Alexandria) Reese, and I’m a 28 year-old, fighting to get my life back from the tragedy of paralysis caused by a stray bullet from a gang shooting.
Before the May 27th 2010 incident that changed my life, I was a pretty busy 25year-old girl, working retail as a manager, starting 2nd job in daycare facility lining up classes for an early childhood education career, as I hoped to use my skills as an artist to reach young children with developmental needs. I also thrived on local live music concerts and karaoke, and if I wasn’t enjoying one of those, my friends would find me ‘thrifting’ to make the ‘mix & match’ outfits that were my trademark, or reading SciFi & Fantasy Books and drawing my own pen & ink illustrations, especially ‘anime’ versions…and sometimes participating in Dungeons & Dragons games when the nerdy guys allowed nerdy girls to join.
But all that changed in an instant.
I did a good deed and gave a ride to a friend, and on the way I was shot through the spine. As a result I have no movement below my neck, and I need a ventilator to breathe, and a ‘cuff’ in my windpipe to be able to speak. But I’m NOT DONE here! The Surgeons & Doctors worked miracles to bring me back from the edge of exsistence, and my determination has forged breakthroughs and I am going to make the best of my life, both for myself and for others!
There is SO MUCH that I need to do yet!
By the kindness of others – I have a special chair that I can control with a ‘sip’ device, and if I had transportation (increasingly unavailable at any price because of liability insurance) I could again go to Concerts, Parks, Community College (I SO want to go back to get that degree!) Speak out against gang violence at Schools, Advocate for the wheelchair bound at the Legislature. Maybe even do a quarterly TV interview to help others whon need to find hope.
I WANT TO BE USEFUL AND I WANT TO BE HAPPY.
I WANT TO WIN BACK SOME PARTS OF LIFE THAT WOULD OTHERWISE BE DENIED.
I CAN’T DO THIS WITHOUT YOU. Please vote, and vote often. Thank You!
