My name is Alfred Bristel. I am 34 years of age. On April 18, 2008 I was the innocent victim of a drive by shooting in my hometown of Amityville, New York. As a result of that shooting I am currently paralyzed from the chest down. Since then, I have been doing intensive therapy. I have made significant progress. I attend therapy at Soutside Outpatient Rehab. I have triumphed over my disability by being very strong and positive. I am a local hero because everyday, I show people that nothing can be taken for granted and at the same time that “when a window closes, others open”. I am commended all the time by family, peers and medical personnel about my positive attitude. I am hoping to start a youth outreach program in my community. I hope that my will and strong mind will be able to reach young people one day. The phrase “life goes on” is very true. No matter what happens in life you have to be strong and keep pushing.
