Althea Estey Independence, VA 873 Votes
My dear friend, Althea Estey, was recently rendered a quadriplegic in a bizarre accident. Her physicians have guarded hope that she can regain the use of her hands with time and therapy and that she will be able to resume her artistic pursuits but it will be a long time coming. Medicare is paying for her basic hospital and nursing home bills but Althea’s other resources are extremely limited. Her family is working on a fundraiser to raise money for the proper wheelchair, lift, modifications to her home as well as a handicap van but raising $100K is difficult in our small community. Winning a van from National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association would be a Godsend for Althea and her family. Althea volunteered for years in the Town of Independence with the Special Events Committee bringing parades, festivals and events to our small town of less than 1000 people. She is an amazing artist working with a number of media but her exceptional gift is graphite portraiture. Althea came to my rescue when my now ex-husband and his brother walked out on our restaurant and bed and breakfast. She has always been willing to assist and teach others and, once she becomes mobile again, she desires to volunteer with other spinal cord injury patients. Althea is an advocate for simple, clean living and leads by example. She promotes economic justice and equality for all. Althea has persevered through divorce, health issues, the loss of a business and lean times but she always achieves success in the ways that count…family, friends and community.
