August 27, 2007 was the day that forever changed our lives as we knew it. Our little HERO came into this world via emergency c-section, as he had to outdo his brother’s births! When Brecken was born, he was not taking life sustaining breaths, so he was intubated and airlifted to our local Children’s hospital where he was a test baby for brain cooling. Brecken was a candidate for brain cooling, because he had gone without oxygen in utero, and he was having seizure after birth which is a sign of brain damage. Once approved, Brecken’s core body temperature was lowered for 72 hours to prevent any further brain damage from occurring. An EEG was then completed and confirmed that Brecken had suffered global damage to his brain as a result of his lack of oxygen prior to his birth.
As a result of his brain injury, Brecken had lost the ability to suck and swallow, so much of our 5 weeks in the hospital was trying to teach him how to suck and swallow. Knowing this would be a long process, we made the decision to have a feeding tube placed when he was 4 weeks old.
Fast forward to 2013…Brecken is a happy 5 year old boy who has many challenges in life, he is unable to walk, talk, or feed himself, but he loves life and will put a smile on anyone who meets him! Brecken loves to go to school to see all of his friends, and he loves spending time with his brothers Brennen and Brayden. They do lots of art projects together, and together we are all working on teaching Brecken the letters in his name! He is doing fantastic!!
As Brecken is getting older, it is harder to transport him from the van to his wheelchair each time we need to make a stop. It is really rough during the winter months when it is too cold and windy to transport him. Having a wheelchair accessible van would mean the world to this Mamma!!!
Thank you and please vote for our HERO!!!!
