Hi- my name is Colin McCarthy. Winning a wheelchair accessible van would enable me to spend more time in the community, with my family and with my friends. I love to be around people, the more the merrier! The older and bigger I get the more challenging it becomes to get me into my car seat and lifting my wheelchair into the back of the van is not easy either. But despite the challenge- my Mom, Dad and brother Shane do their best to take me wherever they go. They get me to every family celebration there is, they take me to Mt. Sunapee in New Hampshire to ski with the New England Handicapped Sports Association, on vacation to Cape Cod, to soccer games to cheer on my brother, I like to go bowling, to the zoo, apple picking and trips to the mall. I have been on a whale watch, and to a Red Sox game. I go to the Greenfield Middle School where I am a 6th grader and am surrounded by great friends that help make my world a better place. I also go to lots of doctor’s appointments.
You see I am a 12 year old nonverbal and non-ambulatory boy that relies on adult assistance for everything I need. I was born with a rare brain disorder called Semilobar holoprosencephaly, this fusion of the frontal lobes of my brain has caused bi-lateral hearing loss, cortical vision impairment, dental abnormalities, respiratory challenges, feeding problems, Diabetes Insipidus, and a form of Epilepsy called Lennox-Gastut Syndrome which causes constant seizure activity in my brain. My 12 years thus far have been a bit of a challenge to say the least.
My family believes that I have a lot to teach others- many have said I bring out the best in the people around me. Despite my daily challenges I try to keep a smile on my face and bring a smile to those around me. I have a laugh that usually gets anybody that hears me laughing as well. We believe that people need to see different abled people out in the world doing ordinary things. Being a winner of an accessible van would make that possible- it would get me to where the action is and definitely keep me smiling. Please vote for me.
