I met Jamie Lopez about 13 years ago, and at the time had no idea that Jamie would be more than just an acquaintance to me. Jamie is an inspiration in my life on a daily basis. He has taught me how I should approach my life and has helped me to appreciate everything, even the challenges. Prior to meeting Jamie, I took life for granted. Walking, talking, breathing on my own or even turning on a light switch are just normal every day occurrences for me, but not for Jamie.
Jamie was diagnosed with MD at an early age. Because of the disease, every day for him is a challenge. Even though Jamie has lost most of his mobility, he has never lost his desire to fight MD and has NEVER allowed himself to be defined by his disabilities. Jamie can no longer speak, but is able to use technology and Face book to inspire others. Not a day goes by that I don’t get a message from Jamie. His messages are always positive, full of thanks for the gift of life, and reminders of how blessed we are regardless of the challenges we face. Jamie has never once asked me to pray for him but always asks me to pray for others.
Recently, I have noticed that Jamie and his loving mother have been confined to their home. Their current vehicle is an old van that is becoming less dependable, less affordable, and will soon not be able to accommodate them. Jamie has a wheelchair that he can operate via a joy stick, but it does not fit in their current van so Jamie is forced to use his old wheelchair when they leave their home. This wheelchair is dependent upon his mother pushing him around. His mother is aging and is also battling illnesses that have made her weaker and less able to move him with ease which in turn makes it difficult for them to venture out. With a new van, Jamie would be able to use his joystick operated wheelchair and can continue to experience the world outside of his home. Jamie spends every moment of his day thinking of how he can inspire others rather than his limitations. What a gift this would be for him.
