I am a 29 yr old mother of 3 and a wife. I was diagnosed with a rare form of Multiple Sclerosis in 2008 and was wheelchair dependent 2 yrs later. I have fought hard for my abilities. I was attending nursing school. I wanted to show the world that I am capable of moving past my disability and I made great things happen for myself. I began clinicals and found the patients were afraid of me. One patient directly asked me, ” what makes you think you can take care of me and keep me safe from that thing?’ , referring to my wheelchair. I understood the patients concerns I am afraid of those without a physical disability assisting me with my mobility, I can only imagine their terror for their own well being. I advocated for these patients and did what was best for their safety and with drew from nursing school. If the disabled don’t speak up for the safety of others then who will. I have overcome multiple obstacles and will fight for my abilities till the end.
